I want to first discuss two crucial terms, Gender Equity and Human Trafficking.

I define equity as:
The quality of being fair or impartial, or something that is fair and just.

Equality or the state of things be equal I don’t see as achievable or desirable. The idea of everyone being equal brings up memories of Vonnegut’s Harrison Bergeron, which is why when people talk of gender equality I am skeptical. Instead what I will be discussing are the various way in which women will have the same opportunities for career development as men do, in a way that is fair for both genders.

Human trafficking has many different definitions depending on which special interest group’s website you are visiting or what author you are reading. For the purposes of this paper I will be using the term “trafficking” or “human trafficking” in accordance with the United Nations definition that states:

"The recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of persons, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation"
Acquired from the United Nations Economic and Social Council for Asia and the Pacific, full definition available here

This definition does not specially refer to sexual exploitation as part of the definition. It refers to the act of moving/transporting people using violence or deceptive means, for exploitative purposes. This is how I understand the term. Other NGO’s use it interchangeably with the “sex trade” or with “prostitution”. I personally do not see the benefit of watering down words to encompass large complicated issues, therefore when referring to human trafficking I mean it in the above context.
